The Advanced Certificate in Educational Leadership is a fully online program open to anyone already possessing teaching certification, a master's degree in education or a related field, and three years of satisfactory teaching or professional experience in a Pre-K-12 setting. This program consists of 30 credit hours of graduate-level courses and includes a total of 600-hours of internship experiences. The program leads to a recommendation to the New York State Education Department for two initial certifications. These are as a School Building Leader (SBL) and School District Leader (SDL). Those state certificates allow the candidate to assume roles as principal, assistant principal, various supervisors, and district office administrative roles, including superintendent.
Requirements for Admission to the Advanced Certificate EDUL Program without Deficiencies
- Valid New York State Education Department (NYSED) teaching certification or equivalent
- Master's degree in education or related field with a minimum GPA of 3.0
- Three (3) years of satisfactory teaching or professional experience in a PreK-12 school or its equivalent
- Evidence of completion of DASA training* for New York State *Applicant may be conditionally accepted pending completion of DASA.
- Two written recommendations, one from the applicant’s
a) district superintendent and
b) immediate supervisor
- A resume
- Applicant’s letter of intention to the admissions committee
- A completed graduate application.
Advising
Candidates should (virtually) meet with the Coordinator once every semester for program planning and course selection.
Program Requirements
There are Fall, Spring, and Summer enrollment portals. The introductory course, EDUL 614 Introduction to Educational Leadership, is open to anyone interested in educational leadership and administration. It is also the prerequisite course for other EDUL courses.
The coursework for this program consists of 30-credit hours total. There are 10 courses of 3 credits, and all conducted online. They are offered in various semesters depending on the candidate's starting semester. Candidates consult with their advisors to plan their schedules.
The Educational Leadership Advanced Certificate is an online, asynchronous graduate studies program. Candidates take one course for half of the semester and, at midterm, transition to another course.
Candidates take one EDUL course at a time. However, candidates may take another course while taking EDUL 640 Internship I: School Building Level or EDUL 641 Internship II School District Level. Candidates are limited to one course per Extended Learning semester.
With advisor approval, candidates may petition the program coordinator for an exception from one course per half-semester scheduling structure.

Candidates are also required to submit an internship portfolio providing evidence of the candidate's impact on students in a Pre-K-12 setting.
As of December 31, 2013, candidates in all education programs are required to complete training under the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA). Those entering the program without the DASA requirement may take EDU 303.
Candidates must also successfully pass a comprehensive oral or written examination and the New York State School Building Leadership Examination. In order to be eligible for New York State School Building Leader Initial Certification, candidates must pass the applicable state examinations.
