This course explores the history, cultures, and social transformations of Hispanic countries through the lens of cinema. Using films from Latin America, Spain, and the U.S. Latino experience, supplemented by readings and presentations, students will learn about the historical and social evolution and key events in the Spanish-speaking world. We will examine the power dynamics and identity complexities depicted in the films. The movies will be watched in the original language with subtitles to make the cultural experience more complete.

This course examines migration and exile in the Hispanic world through film, complemented by selected readings and presentations. By analyzing films as cultural and historical texts, students will gain a deeper understanding of how migration and exile impact individuals, communities, and nations.They will also learn about the history, culture, and socio-political issues of the countries related to the movies. Films will be watched in the original language with subtitles.
