Group applied instruction on brass, woodwind, string, and percussion instruments to develop a playing competence sufficient to teach beginning students through NYSSMA Level II on at least one instrument in each area. The preliminary course for the Foundations of Music Education sequence combines an introductionto and exploration of the purposes and premises of music education. Class sessions seek to broaden students' perspectives of the profession and of the potential for a rewarding career in music education.

Students will explore learning and facilitating the learning of others in vernacular music contexts via development of vernacular musicianship skills. Students will learn ways to include informal and non-formal instruction in their music teaching and apply functional aural skills through engaging in self- and peer-teaching and collaboration. Vernacular musicianship emphasizes students' musical autonomy, songwriting, and creative music-making and includes popular styles of music such as rock, country, hip-hop, rap, reggae, and dubstep.
