PHED 187 Bracketology

Bracketology is the science or art of projecting who will make the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. The students will learn why teams are seeded higher or lower than others, or why one team got in while another team was passed over and how to figure out those answers before this information is officially announced. This course will show how to analyze teams critically and objectively. The class will cover the history and evolution of the Tournament and the various rankings and metrics used by the Selection Committee, and the rules the Committee must follow throughout the process. Each student will be assigned conferences to monitor and report on throughout the class. The class will have a formal debate on a major issue in college basketball. Students will learn, and emulate, the process used for selecting and seeding teams. Finally, the class will assemble a bracket as a group before making their own as a final assignment, and see how their bracket compares to those of other professional and amateur bracketologists.
